What’s so bad about added sugar?
Horses were designed to live on fibre. The hind gut is a large fermentation chamber designed to break down the links that hold fibre together. However, when horses are fed high sugar diets, the horses’ enzymes cannot cope and the sugars flood from the small intestines into the hind gut, bringing with it sugar feeding bacteria. These bacteria create an acidic environment, which leads to changes in gut composition, death of fibre ferments and a rise in endotoxins. Problems associated with high sugar diets include:
